A few months ago a friend’s sister-in-law commissioned some portraits of her two children. We headed out to a woody family park in Richmond and I snapped away as they led us around the trees and chased ducks along the river. They seemed to absolutely love being followed around by a photographer and we had a lot of fun. One of the things I really like about that sort of ‘loose’ engagement as opposed to posed portraits is that after a while the subjects will forget for a while that the camera is there and with a long lens I can capture some candid moments, like this one. Not posed at all, and better for it icon smile on the bridge

I’ve used a B&W adjustment layer set to Soft Light to add rich contrast, with a little more linear contrast added with a curve set to Luminosity (so that the colours would be left mostly alone). I brought up the reeds in the background through the gaps in the bridge to give it a bit more of a ‘lit’ look, and yep, there’s a vignette!
