My friends David ‘Geli’ Geli and Polly ‘Polly’ McGirr manage Up The Creek Comedy Club in Greenwich, London, and I invited myself down to one of their open mic nights to get some practice snapping the performers.

As well as the ‘amateurs’ taking the stage for the first time they have established comics on as well, who might want to give some new material a go. This is Paul Sweeney, and it was pretty obvious from the way he held the stage and worked the audience that he was no newcomer. He’s also very photogenic, striking a new pose during this set every ten seconds or so, but this one of him directly addressing someone in the crowd is one of my favourites.

I shot these in B&W on my D700 and gave them only a slight tweak for exposure and contrast in Lightroom 5.
