This is Richard Everson, one of my colleagues in the camera crew on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch. At this exact moment Richard is on camera 2, shooting what we call a ‘menu shot’ or ‘pack shot’ of one of chef Simon Rimmer’s delicious creations for the show. He knows I’m taking a photo of him, hence the grin!
Usually we are in from 6am for a meeting, followed by rehearsals of all the cooking items with Simon, then all the other ‘tricksy’ items in the show, except interviews which don’t need to be rehearsed as a rule. Simon will cook each item properly, from scratch, the same as will be done later when we go live, and when the dish is ready camera 2 shoots a super-arty zoom out of it, lingering on all the juicy bits, that gets dropped into the “here’s what’s coming up later on the show” menu that Tim Lovejoy voices when he comes in.
After that the dish is taken to be photographed by a stills camera, usually by the camera supervisor that day, which goes onto the website. And after that’s done? We eat it! 🙂
